Makar Sankranti - 2025

14th & 15th Jan, 2025

Makar Sankranti, celebrated in Sanatan Dharma, marks the sun’s transition into Capricorn, symbolizing the end of winter and the start of longer days. It is a time of thanksgiving for the harvest season. In ISKCON, devotees engage in sankirtan, prayers, and cultural programs to honor Lord Krishna. Special prasadam, like kichri, halwa is distributed, and Anna Seva (food donation) is encouraged, spreading blessings and spiritual nourishment to all.

Makar Sankranti is a significant festival celebrated in Vedic culture. It marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar Rashi). This auspicious day is observed on January 14th every year.

Makar Sankranti holds great spiritual and cultural importance. It signifies the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days, symbolizing the arrival of warmer weather and the harvest season. It is a time of gratitude and thanksgiving for the abundance of nature.

This festival is also associated with various religious beliefs and practices. Devotees take holy dips in sacred rivers like the Ganges, Yamuna, and Godavari, offering prayers to the sun god. It is believed that bathing in these rivers on Makar Sankranti purifies one’s sins and brings spiritual upliftment.

The festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy. People exchange til (sesame) and jaggery sweets, symbolizing unity and the sweetness of relationships. Kite flying is a popular tradition during Makar Sankranti, representing the freedom of the soul and the eradication of negativity.

In ISKCON, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a significant festival. Devotees offer prayers and devotional activities to Lord Krishna on this auspicious day. They engage in sankirtan (congregational chanting of the holy names), reading and discussing the glories of Lord Krishna, and offering special food preparations to the Lord. The celebration includes cultural programs, traditional dances, and dramas depicting the pastimes of Lord Krishna. Devotees exchange gifts and extend their love and goodwill to one another. It is a joyous occasion to express devotion and gratitude to Lord Krishna.

Prasadam distribution is an integral part of ISKCON’s culture. Prasadam distribution during festivals is a way to share the mercy of the Lord with everyone. It is specially offered as prasadam and distributed to devotees and guests during Makar Sankranti.

The act of distributing prasadam is considered an act of charity and a means to spiritually nourish individuals. It is an opportunity to offer the mercy of the Lord to all, regardless of their background or social status.

Please come forward and donate generously for performance of ANNA Seva for the devotees, guests visiting temple and also to devotees in tribal areas on this auspicious occasion and invite the blessings of the Lord and His devotees.
